REACH - “Reach Each Child”

REACH, "Reach Each CHild" - A Child Healthcare Centric Initiative,

In February 2014, a Committee was formed, which decided that the Social initiatives of the group will focus on ‘Child Healthcare’. Twenty leading pediatricians across India were invited for the meeting at Ahmedabad to have understanding of the issues pertaining to the health of children. The meeting was followed by visits by the committee members to some of the leading child care facilities in India and also visited several leading pediatric hospitals in UK, USA and Canada to get a first-hand understanding of the healthcare facilities being provided to the children.

REACH - “Reach Each Child”

Initiated in 2016, REACH is a Child Healthcare centric initiative and the flagship program of UNM Foundation. The involvement of the employees of Torrent Group as volunteers under the program has been a key pillar of the program.

  • Activities under REACH are divided into two major parts
    • Grassroot interventions: Spreading child healthcare awareness and providing support in addressing malnutrition and anemia.
    • Clinical interventions: Establishing pediatric healthcare centers and state-of-the-art hospitals to treat underprivileged children.

Grass Root Interventions:

The main activities (at no cost to the beneficiaries) are:

  • Conducting focused camps and spreading awareness about Child healthcare
  • During outreach activities, children needing clinical interventions are referred to our nearest Pediatric Primary Healthcare Centers (PPHCs) and subsequently, if required, they are then taken to the UNM Children Hospital for secondary and tertiary treatment
  • Identifying cases of malnutrition & anemia and distributing nutritional supplements and iron supplements
  • One of the problems that came up during the program to treat malnutrition and anemia within children was that children would often stop taking the supplements due to monotony of taste of such supplements. To address this problem, UNM Foundation has developed Nutri dense cookies (named “Mauji”), which have a good taste and provide necessary nutrition to malnourished children.
  • Spreading health and hygiene awareness amongst adolescent girls and providing them environmentally friendly sanitary napkins.
  • Progress so far:
    • More than 1,600 villages have been covered
    • 1.5 lakh children screened and more than 70,000 children have been successfully brought out of malnutrition and anemia with focused efforts and rigorous monitoring.
    • More than 72000 girls (unique beneficiaries) in 1200+ villages are benefitted through the initiative.

The idea for creating a platform such as Abhivyakti arose from the understanding that it is necessary to make art available and accessible to people from all social strata. Historically, the ability to enjoy art is associated to a position of privilege. It is to debunk this construction that Abhivyakti pursues to reach out to a more heterogeneous group of audience. Every individual finds themselves with an unquenchable desire to voice their minds and to express thought. We provide a medium that enables dialogue around this and further pushes us to ask new questions.

Abhivyakti encompasses many myriad art forms ranging from dance, music, painting, photography, installations and theatre with an aim to bring international quality art to the people, absolutely free.

Pratiti

City parks play a vital role in the social, economic and physical wellbeing of the cities and their residents. As cities become more densely populated, parks are now recognized as powerful tools for active lifestyles and reduced health costs for the urban communities. Parks provide space for neighborhood residents to interact with each other and meet new people. This allows people to develop a sense of community.

The UNM Foundation along with LEAF, the research arm of Landscape India, formed a group ‘The Park’s People’ which also included many like-minded designers of the city. UNM Foundation and The Park’s people in association with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation started Pratiti. Several parks have been developed so far, which are located in varied economic and social cross sections of the Ahmedabad city. Some are new parks and some are refurbished parks.

The Foundation has developed and is currently maintaining 15 beautifully landscaped gardens in the cities of Ahmedabad, Surat and Daman for the general benefit of citizens and increasing the green cover of the city. Work for more gardens is also underway

Each of these parks have been developed keeping in mind a unique design, by well-renowned team of architects. These parks have lush green lawn, various types of plants and facilities like walk-way, special enclosure for light games, exercise equipment and beautiful landscaping. Each park is protected by specially designed fencing and also have a special entrance facility for the differently abled people. Moreover each park is equipped with bore well and has recharge well to effectively use the rainwater.

Pratiti plans to continue with this initiative and have further plans to create many more parks including developing parks in impoverished neighborhoods.

2 Lakes across 2 cities have been restored / built at par with international standards.
